A hit-and-run driver has been sentenced in a 2024 crash that sent a man in a golf cart to the emergency room.

Jason Michael McCray, 50, of Fruitland Park, pleaded guilty this past month in Sumter County Court to charges of leaving the scene of an accident and criminal mischief. He has been placed on probation for two years.

A man had been driving a golf cart on Priddy Way in Middleton when he was struck by a black Ford F-150 pickup. The golf cart driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the UF Health Emergency Room Clinic at Brownwood, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. The truck fled the scene.

The pickup was caught on video surveillance about the time of the hit-and-run crash making a right turn onto Leanne Lane from Stampeder Trail when the truck jumped the curb and hit the gate arm at the entrance to Middleton. The gate arm fell off and hit the ground. The surveillance camera captured the truck’s license plate number.

Images of the truck were shown to the golf cart driver, who confirmed it was the same truck that hit his golf cart. Thanks to the surveillance images, a warrant was issued for McCray’s arrest.
