SECO Energy is expanding its transition to high-intensity LED streetlights throughout The Villages, moving away from the traditional High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) fixtures that have long illuminated the area.
SECO contends that the LED transition is a necessary upgrade, noting that “LED lighting is more environmentally friendly and provides improved visibility and a more uniform distribution of light.”
However, the energy cooperative is also issuing a fair warning to residents: the new lights may be significantly brighter than what they are accustomed to.
“Residents may notice a difference in the appearance and color of the new LED lighting,” SECO officials stated in a recent letter to customers. “LED fixtures produce a more uniform white light, while existing HPS fixtures emit a softer yellow light.”

The rollout has faced some pushback. During a Sumter County Commission meeting in March, Village of Charlotte resident Karen Gentry reported that the brighter lights installed along Morse Boulevard were shining directly into her windows, making it difficult to sleep. County officials have acknowledged that her complaint is not an isolated incident and that they have received similar feedback from other residents regarding the intensity of the new lighting.
