The League of Women Voters of Citrus County is hosting a specialized training course next weekend to help attorneys, judges and community advocates navigate the complex process of restoring voting rights for former felons.
The League of Women Voters of The Villages/Tri-County is helping to promote the event.
Cecile Scoon, co-chair of the League of Women Voters of Florida’s Restoration of Rights Action Team, will lead the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course. The session will cover the best administrative and judicial processes for assisting individuals with felony convictions in regaining their civil rights.
Scoon previously served as the League’s action chair for Amendment 4, the 2018 statewide initiative overwhelmingly approved by voters to automatically restore a felon’s voting rights after the completion of their sentence. However, a subsequent implementing bill required former felons to pay all associated fines and fees before those rights could be fully restored, creating a significant hurdle and a high demand for legal assistance.
The training will take place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, at the Nature Coast Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 7633 N. Florida Ave. in Citrus Springs.
Following the course, attendees are invited to a casual meeting with Scoon. Light refreshments will be served.
