Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter wins $25,000 grant for Veterans Village

Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter has been chosen as a recipient of a $25,000 Open Doors Homeownership Grant from CAHEC to assist in the costs of development of the Veterans Village in Umatilla.

Created in 1992, CAHEC ranks as one of the largest nonprofit regional equity syndicators in the United States. In addition to its mission to provide communities with affordable housing and opportunities for growth, CAHEC offers a series of Community Investments grants that empower residents, promote the development of affordable rental and ownership housing, and foster sustainability within the communities they serve.

“The mission of our organization and CAHEC’s aligned well – we both focus on empowering homeowners and potential homeowners through an inclusive partnership, knowing that the end result lends to community building.  We are so happy to be able to build this neighborhood for our Veterans and hope they feel right at home,” said Danielle Stroud, director of development for Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter.

CAHEC awards the grant to non-profit organizations that are engaged in developing affordable housing for sale to low-income households. As per agreement, the grant will be allocated towards costs associated with development, and will be going towards the creation of architectural blueprints of new on-site developments at the Veterans Village.

“We are extremely grateful for CAHEC’s partnership” said Kent Adcock, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter. “The funds will benefit 12 different veteran families who will reside in Habitat’s Veterans Village and will be utilized for community and house design costs.  Construction is beginning this month and we couldn’t be more excited.”

The Veterans Village broke ground on Nov. 5. It is a 14-home development designed as a Florida cottage “pocket community” for service men and women. The homes are located on Lake Enola with walkable access to downtown and near the local bus line.
