A 23-year-old man who allegedly tried to fraudulently return a pair of shoes and then fled from Wal-Mart at Buffalo Ridge shopping plaza, has been arrested after being tracked down by his license plate number.

Michael Tyler Prevatt of Webster entered the store at about 6:15 p.m. Feb. 3 carrying a bag with a shoebox and went to the shoe department, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He took the shoebox from his bag and exchanged it with a shoebox on the shelf. He then went to the Customer Service Center and received a cash refund of $26.46 for the shoes, the arrest report indicated. A loss prevention officer approached Prevatt who then fled through the Tire Lube Express at the store. Once in the parking lot, Prevatt drove away in a car.

The loss prevention officer took down the license plate number of the vehicle in which Prevatt fled.

The license number was traced to Prevatt’s vehicle and he was arrested Monday night.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. Bond was set at $1,500.
