Sumter Landing Community Development District supervisors approved preliminary design of a traffic signal for the problematic cart crossing at Colony Boulevard during Thursday’s board meeting. Design of the traffic signal will be developed by the design consulting firm Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. Kimley-Horn will also develop a report on the associated safety and cost of implementing a tunnel or bridge at the site.
Early estimates have implementation of the traffic signal anywhere between $150,000 to $200,000, with an additional bridge or tunnel possibly pushing that total to $1 million. A letter from the office of Gary Morse indicated that the developer is in favor of the study to estimate what the total cost of both the traffic signal and potential bridge or tunnel will be, and to examine the safety of the proposed solutions.
On Oct. 28, Community Watch began directing traffic from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the point where the golf cart path crosses Colony Boulevard near Colony Cottage Recreation Center. The daily cost of having Community Watch direct traffic at that site is roughly $200 per day or $1,400 per week.
