A 20-year-old man and 16-year-old suspect have been captured in the burglary of an occupied home, apparently after Sumter deputies identified them from surveillance tape of the stores where they used stolen credit cards.

Derrell Harrison Jr. was picked up at his home on charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling, grand theft and fraudulent use of personal identification, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office reported today. On Tuesday, detectives arrested the 16-year-old from Coleman, also on charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling and grand theft.

According to Lt. Bobby Caruthers, sheriff’s spokesman, deputies responded to a call of a home being burglarized on Jan. 3 while the homeowner slept. The homeowners awoke to find their screen torn out and their 50-inch TV, debit cards and other items missing from the home. Deputies found the TV on the side of the road.

Caruthers said the suspects used the victims’ bank cards in Leesburg and Winter Garden. Detectives were able to use the store’s surveillance footage to identify the suspects and their identity was confirmed by fingerprints found on the television set.
