The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension in Lake County is hosting two free “Closing Your Seasonal Home” programs in March to help residents prepare for long departures.
The course will offer tips for closing seasonal homes or leaving for an extended period of time, including preparing interiors and exteriors, preventing mold and mildew, storm preparation, updating documents, preventing pests and protection from burglars. Participants will gain an understanding of what they can do to minimize the possibility of discovering serious issues when they return home.
The first class is from 1 – 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3 at the Lady Lake Public Library, 225 W. Guava Street, Lady Lake. Registration is available at https://closinghome2014.eventbrite.com.
The second class is from 10:30 a.m. – noon on Friday, March 7 at the Lake County Extension Office, 1951 Woodlea Road, Tavares. Registration is available at https://lakehomeprep.eventbrite.com.
“People aren’t the only ones who love Florida’s weather,” said Julie England, Family and Consumer Sciences extension agent with UF/IFAS Extension in Lake County. “Mildew thrives in our warm and humid environment. If you are leaving home for an extended period of time, whether for the season or a long vacation, develop a plan to prevent damage to your home while you are gone. An empty home is susceptible to moisture, mildew, pests, storms and more.”
