When Joan Rockwell of the Village of Bonnybrook saw the “Starry Starry Night” notice on the bulletin board at the postal station, she knew she wanted to take part in the stargazing event.
Not so long ago, she was in France visiting the famed sanitarium where Vincent Van Gogh painted his classic, “The Starry Night.”
Saturday night was a beautiful night for stargazing outside Lake Miona Recreation Center. The event was sponsored by the Villages Astronomy Club.
Club members set up their powerful telescopes for the public to use.
Bruce Sinclair was setting up a large telescope he had won in a chance drawing. The telescope had been constructed by the St. Petersburg Astronomy Club.
“It was four tickets for $20,” Sinclair said.
Nine-year-old Caiden Martos, visiting his grandparents Mary Jane Phillips and Bo Martos of the Village of Sanibel, used club president Michael Weiss’ telescope for a clear look at Tranquility Base on the surface of the moon.
Weiss, a resident of the Village of Pennecamp, said he has been fascinated by astronomy since his youth.
