The son of a Villages couple was struck by a golf cart while riding his bicycle at about 3 p.m. Monday on Paige Place at Avenida Central.
The golf cart’s side curtain struck the bicyclist, 23-year-old Ryan McElroy of Atlanta, knocking him to the pavement. The golf cart was attempting to pass McElroy who was riding in the golf cart lane.
The golf cart driver, described as a woman wearing a red shirt and white pants, kept going and did not stop. Lady Lake police officers responded to the scene and issued a “Be On the Lookout” order for the woman with no luck.
But McElroy, an assistant to the sound and media director at an Atlanta church, was armed with a secret weapon. He was wearing a helmet camera that recorded the collision. The video has been turned over to the police.
“I record all of my bicycle rides,” he said.
McElroy, here visiting his parents Tom and Kimi McElroy, is sore after the collision with the golf cart.
Lake EMS examined him at the scene, but he did not require transportation for medical treatment.
The accident report indicates McElroy was properly bicycling in the golf cart lane. The golf cart, described as green in color with blue side curtains, failed to give McElroy the proper amount of room, the report indicated.
