The Humane Society/SPCA is requesting support from the community for donations of dry cat food for their many rescued cat and kittens as well as their “Kibbles on Wheels” pet food assistance program which helps provide food to the pets of eligible low income residents throughout Sumter County. Donations of dry cat food bags or financial contributions can be earmarked for “pet food” when done by check or via Paypal on their website hsspca.org.
Bill Gottschalk, HS/SPCA President and Kibbles Program Coordinator pointed out “our supply of dry cat food is practically depleted right now so we are concerned for the nearly 75 cats that rely on their monthly allotment to not go hungry.”
The current economic challenges have made it difficult for many less fortunate area residents, he said. The Society’s services are being strained continuously to meet the growing needs in these trying times. On average, the HS/SPCA currently provides more than 2,000 pounds of pet food each month to feed dogs and cats of low income families within Sumter County.
“To those wishing to help on a larger scale” Gottschalk suggested “clubs, neighborhoods and youth groups may want to take this opportunity to organize a pet food drive during the summer months ahead and make a big difference during an urgent time of need.”
In northern Sumter, donations can be dropped off at PAWS Animal Hospital, Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital (both locations), Whole Earth Pet Supply, PAWS For a Moment Natural Pet Food Market, Bone Crazy Dog Grooming. In southern Sumter, donations can be dropped off at Willy Nilly Feed in Bushnell or at the HS/SPCA office on CR 529A (one road east of the SC Landfill) Mon.-Sat. between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mailed donations can be sent to the Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County at PO Box 67, Lake Panasoffkee, FL 33538 or securely online at hsspca.org via Paypal.
