Marion County Commission Chairman Carl Zalak III has a challenge on his hands, but he also has plenty of money in the bank.
Zalak of Ocala represents District 4, the most northern and eastern commission district in Marion County.
In August, Zalak will face former county commissioner Glen Fiorello. Both are Republicans. Zalak has $67,358.60 in campaign funding. Fiorello has $15,025.
In 2010, Zalak defeated incumbent Democratic Commissioner Barbara Fitos.
Candidate qualifying begins Monday.
There are 216,710 registers voters in Marion County. The Marion County electorate is made up of 92,361 Republicans, 77,820 Democrats and 46,529 voters who have not declared their party affiliation.
