Ask grandchildren what they love about visiting their grandparents in The Villages and one almost always gets the same, enthusiastic response.

Their grandparents’ golf carts.

When grandchildren reach the magical age of 14, then they can legally drive a golf cart in The Villages.

Camp Villages was doing its part to make that rite of passage a safe one in a Golf Cart Safety Class on Thursday morning at Colony Cottage Recreation Center.

The safety and training is conducted by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

Austin McCampbell, who will be in ninth grade this fall in West Palm Beach, took the class while his grandmother, Mary Page of West Palm Beach, and his great aunt, Sally Windsor of the Village of Bonita, proudly looked on. Page comes to visit her sister in The Villages about this time each year.

Austin was studiously driving his great aunt’s golf cart as a deputy provided instruction to the young drivers.

Madison Taylor of the Recreation Department said 11 Camp Villagers participated in the golf cart safety class Thursday morning. Participants had to be at least 14 years old.

The Villages Insurance sponsored the event.

“It’s important to remind grandchildren and grandparents alike that insurance is a part of overall safety,” said Shad Finley, an advisor with The Villages Insurance.

If your grandchildren missed the first Camp Villages golf cart safety training session, there will be another opportunity. Another session will be offered at 10 a.m. July 10 at Colony Cottage Recreation Center. Tickets are available through The Villages Box Office.
