Avenida Central is seeing its first major resurfacing since it was constructed a couple of decades ago.

Lady Lake is footing the bill for the $760,000 project.

Asphalt Paving Systems is performing the work, which, weather permitting, should be complete within the next couple of weeks.

And those observing the work and following the orange cones during the detours might be surprised to learn that this is a “green” project.

A technique known as “Cold in Place” (CIP) recycling is being used. It takes the old material, grinds it up and replaces it on the roadway.

“It is very green,” said Lady Lake Public Works Director C.T. Eagle. “We don’t have to truck in new material.”

The project is going so well that it might even come in $100,000 under budget.

“I am keeping my fingers crossed,” Eagle said.

It would be good news for the Lady Lake Commission which has been wrestling the past few months with grave budget concerns, including a proposed tax increase.
