Amenity Authority Committee candidate Frank Kirschenheiter said he believes the District isn’t living up to a promise to get lighting installed at four pools that lost night swimming earlier this year.

The Orange Blossom Gardens resident said it appears that little to nothing has been done to install proper lighting at Paradise, Hilltop, Southside and Chula Vista pools.

Night swimming was suspended in April following an inspection by the Department of Health which found there wasn’t sufficient lighting to support night swimming at those pools.

District officials said they continue to work with vendors to try to secure pricing on the lighting.

District Manager Janet Tutt said the District had tried to save $100,000 on the lighting, but was unsuccessful.

“We rolled the dice and lost. I’ll take the blame for that. If we’d won, we would have been heroes,” Tutt said.

She added that retrofitting the older facilities is problematic and contractors aren’t necessarily attracted to that type of work, particularly when the construction industry is strong.

The estimated cost of lighting is an average of $37,000 for each of the four pools.

District officials said they are planning to meet this week with potential contractors.
