It’s going to take Villages District staff up to five months to gather information about the possibility of establishing a covered pool in The Villages.
Amenity Authority Committee member Carl Bell is the champion of the move for a covered pool. He has said that he believes the dangers of skin cancer necessitates a covered pool here in The Villages.
Other members of the AAC have agreed to move ahead with research on the idea.
However, it is going to take a little time according to materials to be discussed at Wednesday’s AAC meeting.
“It is anticipated that to provide the necessary information, it will take no greater than five months to gather all the necessary data and provide a comprehensive analysis to the AAC. At that time, costs, options, and alternatives will be provided and then, if and as directed by the AAC, will be provided to residents for input. Only after a determination regarding the type of pool, cost and gathering of resident input can we begin to recommend the actual logistics involved in the use of the pool,” according to an agenda item included in the packet for the upcoming AAC meeting.
There are numerous issues to be considered, including where the pool would be located and whether it would be a fee-based facility.
Bell has indicated that he believes the best location would be at the existing El Santiago pool.
More than 5,000 people took a Villages-News.com online poll concerning the idea of a climate-controlled pool in The Villages.
Forty-six percent of the respondents said they were opposed to the idea of a covered pool, 45 percent said they were in favor of the idea, while 9 percent said they needed more information.
The AAC meets at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Savannah Center.
