Villages resident Tami Dion, who is the senior community engagement representative for the American Cancer Society’s Florida Division, is hoping many folks in The Villages and surrounding areas will mark their calendars for April 24. The 2015 Relay for Life event will be held on the grounds of New Covenant United Methodist Church, 3470 Woodridge Drive, near County Road 466 in The Villages, from 3 to 9 p.m. on that date.

Nearly everyone has been affected by cancer in their lifetime, either personally or through family members or friends — and the annual Relay for Life is a great way to have fun while raising awareness and funds to fight the disease.

With health care and active lifestyles in the forefront of Villagers’ daily lives, coming together to support cancer research, patient care, education and prevention programs the ACS offers to everyone fits well with our community mindset.

Over the past 25 years, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life has become the largest group of annual events ever run in support of a critical non-profit healthcare organization.

The ACS hopes you will join in their fight for the prevention, treatment and cure of all types of cancer. They provide more funding for cancer research than any other organization outside of the U. S. federal government.

Within The Villages, the ACS has a presence at the Moffitt Cancer Center, which includes programs, information services, rides and free wigs for individuals going through cancer treatment. The regional ACS office recently moved close by, to the Oakland Hills Professional Center, located at 13940 U.S. Hwy. 27/441.

For people who have not taken part in a previous Relay for Life, there are always many fun activities, games, vendors and food. It’s also a great way to honor and support cancer survivors, remember loved ones who have lost their battle with the disease — and to celebrate the many successes.

Tami Dion is looking for sponsors, team members and other volunteers. Contact her at the ACS office: 352 350-2273 x 5708 or [email protected].
