The Amenity Authority Committee has unanimously agreed to spend $90,000 to add another lane of traffic to the Del Mar Gate.
There has been concern about the high volume of traffic at the gate.
The four-way stop near the gate, put in place by the town of Lady Lake, has worsened the situation, said District Manager Janet Tutt.
“The biggest issue is those three lanes of traffic trying to turn into one lane of traffic,” Tutt said.
A proposal approved by the AAC Wednesday morning, included possible staffing by a gate attendant on either a full or part-time basis. The AAC will gather more information about possible staffing, including seasonal adjustments and staffing for major events at Spanish Springs Town Square.
Tutt also indicated that engineer will look at the possibility of a golf-cart bypass, similar to the one at the Morse gate off U.S. Hwy. 27/441 .
AAC member Lowell Barker said he went over and watched the flow of traffic recently at the Del Mar Gate.
“At 4 p.m. in the afternoon somebody pulled up to that gate and expected it to open and just sat there. That got everything backed up,” Barker said. “Somebody finally got out of there car and went up and hit the button.”
At least one resident said the change is long overdue.
“It gets so bad I don’t even go to that gate anymore. I go around the long way. Thank God, something will be done,” Villager Judy Glasel said.
