The 12th Annual Men’s Talon Residents Cup has begun.
On Tuesday, 140 men teed it up at Havana Country Club for the first day of qualifying. One hundred and one of the golfers were playing from the Blue Tees, and 39 golfers over 70 were playing from the White Tees. All were hoping to qualify for either the Nicklaus or Palmer team.
The second round of qualifying will be held again Wednesday at Havana with the top 96 players from the Blue Tees qualifying for the teams, as well as 32 from the White Tees. The top two qualifiers will be named captains of the two teams, and will then select their teams from the remainder of the qualifiers.
The conditions were very tough at Havana on Tuesday with up to 25 mph gusting winds and fast greens. Only two golfers were able to better par, Tom Gallagher shot a 2 under par 70, and Dave Lake, 1 under par 71.
“I hit the ball good today, and putted very well,” Gallagher said.
Once the teams are selected from the two days of qualifying the Ryder Cup format tournament will be held at Nancy Lopez Legacy Golf Course on May 13 (Best Ball), May 14 (Chapman Alternate Shot), and May 16, (Individual Match play).
