The District’s engineer, who has staunchly recommended against center striping on multi-modal paths in The Villages, had now come out against side striping.
An advance copy of the report prepared by Kimley-Horn Associates Inc. for the Multi-Modal Path Discussion Group indicates the engineer has recommended against side markings on the 42-miles of paths in The Villages.
The $6,500 study, the cost of which will be shared by Community Development Districts 1-10, has been prepared in advance of the July 6 meeting of the Multi-Modal Path Discussion Group. That meeting will be held at 9 a.m. in the Ashley Wilkes room at Savannah Center.
Villages-News.com has obtained a copy of the 13-page report prepared by engineer Richard Busche of Kimley-Horn & Associates Inc.
The report looks at landscape median treatment, edge line marking and raised pavement markings (RPMs).
Centerline striping, as has been put down in CDD 4, was not part of the study.
The recommendations made in the report are:
1. Consistent pavement markings should be applied on the approach to center landscape medians within the multi-use trail system.
2. Edge-line marking is not recommended. “The historic crash data demonstrates a low frequency of nighttime crashes, and does not indicate a crash trend due to adverse nighttime visibility,” the report states.
In addition, the report points out that the average cost of 4-inch thermoplastic marking is nearly $3,500 per net mile.
3. RPMs are recommended at locations where geometric constraints warrant specific delineation of travel lanes. RMPs are not recommended for use on the right-hand edge of the multi-use trail due to the potential impact to pedestrian and bicycle safety.
