To the Editor:
There are areas on the golf cart paths that will remain poorly visible at night and during inclement weather despite the excellent decision made by the Multi-modal Path Discussion Group. Unfortunately, improving visibility in those areas will require edge line striping. The engineer we hired has written that his “judgment does not indicate that placing edge line marking is likely to decrease safety.” Why, then, has he recommended against such striping (which according to his own guideline – the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, states “Edge line markings have unique value as visual references to guide road users during adverse weather and visibility conditions?”)
After so many requests for striping by night time users of the paths and the recognition of this by prior votes of the Multi-modal Path Discussion Group, might we not be opening ourselves up to lawsuits for negligence for not spending the relatively low amounts to do appropriate striping?
