An alert bank teller led to the arrest of a 50-year-old Orlando man who attempted to cash a fraudulent $1,992.12 check Tuesday at Citizens First Bank on Colony Boulevard.
Thomas Michael O’Hare allegedly entered the bank and attempted to cash the check which appeared to be from T & D Concrete.
However, a teller notified her manager something was amiss and the manager contacted T&D Concrete. The check was determined to be fraudulent.
O’Hare said two men had approached him and offered to take him to a thrift store and buy him some nice clothes, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. They instructed him to take the check into the bank and cash it. They had promised to pay him for his efforts.
O’Hare later admitted to deputies, “It seemed too good to be true.”
O’Hare was arrested on a felony charge of fraud. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $2,000 bond.
