Congressman Ron DeSantis, who brought his campaign for the U.S. Senate to The Villages last month, has signed on as House sponsor of a bill that would block Syrian refuges from entering the country.

The Senate sponsor of the bill is Ted Cruz, a GOP candidate for the White House. DeSantis, also a Republican, is hoping to win the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Marco Rubio. DeSantis visited The Villages last month with Congressman Trey Gowdy in tow.

Cruz’s bill, the Terrorist Refugee Infiltration Prevention Act,  would block the entry into the United States of refugees from Iraq, Syria and other countries where terrorist groups control large territories.

“The first duty of the United States government is to protect the American people,” DeSantis said in announcing his sponsorship of the companion legislation to Cruz’s bill.
