
Reed Gilbert Quinn, 86, of the Village of Bonita, died on December 16, 2015. Reed was born on November 28, 1929, in Austin, TX, to George Clark Quinn Sr. and Anne Lorene Karr. Reed was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, George Quinn, James Quinn, and William Quinn. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Quinn of The Villages, FL; his step-daughter Colleen Hilton (Ken) of Casper, WY; two grandsons, Kenneth Hilton and Reed Hilton of Laramie, WY; and a great granddaughter, Mackenzie Hilton of Laramie, WY.
Reed was a life-long athlete. He was a star athlete through his school years in Austin. He was an All-State football player for Austin High School and a standout on the track and field team. He played freshman football at University of Texas and starred as an All-Conference player at Tyler Junior College, Tyler TX. He was a running back and punter at the University of Florida from 1951 to 1953 and was a member of the first Gator team to go to a bowl game. He threw discus, javelin and shot put and was a member of the 1953 SEC conference championship team. He was a Gator letterman in football and track and field and completed his degree in 1954. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1953, but Uncle Sam won the draft, and Reed served in Europe with the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.
Following his Army service, Reed was a teacher, football coach and athletic director in Pensacola, FL; Key West, FL; and Miami, FL. In 1960 he began employment as an investigator with Naval Intelligence Service and Naval Investigative Service, serving as a Special Agent in Charleston, SC; Memphis, TN; Adak, AK; and Kodiak, AK, and a Special Agent and Polygraph Examiner in San Francisco, CA. In 1972 he transferred to the Defense Investigative Service and served as a Special Agent and Special Agent in Charge in Sacramento, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; Denver, CO; and Dallas, TX until his retirement in 1990.
Reed married Lorraine Rodgers in Dallas, TX, on March 17, 1990. They enjoyed life on the road in their RV until 1992, when they settled in Florida for winters and continued RV travel in summers. The couple lived in Gainesville, FL, from 2000 to 2009 for his wife’s employment, and they moved to The Villages in 2009 after Lorraine’s retirement. Reed enjoyed hunting and fishing throughout his life. He continued his athletic exploits during his retirement, competing in throwing events at Masters and Senior events in numerous states. He played with the Bonita Blues neighborhood softball team for a season. Reed loved life in The Villages and was an avid golfer and enthusiastic participant at neighborhood social events in Upper Bonita. His wit, sense of humor, and smile made him a popular figure in the neighborhood.
A memorial service will be held in The Villages after the first of the year.
