Man charged with stealing transmitter at Wal-Mart claims he was going to test it before buying

A 22-year-old man who allegedly attempted to steal a FM stereo transmitter at Wal-Mart at Buffalo Ridge said he was simply taking it out to his car to test it before making the purchase.

Derrell Patrick Harrison of Coleman entered the store at 11:45 a.m. Thursday and walked straight to the electronics department, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He picked up the Scosche FM stereo transmitter, went to the garden center and unwrapped it and concealed it in the pocket of his pants, the report indicated. He then left the store.

When a deputy arrived, Harrison said, “I was just going to test it in my car to see if it worked before I bought it.”

He was arrested on a charge of shoplifting

Coleman was already on felony probation.

He was booked without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.
