The Amenity Authority Committee may have the opportunity to purchase five acres of land from the Developer.
The five acres is located behind the Rio Grande Family Pool. It serves now as an unofficial dog park.
District Manager Janet Tutt said the District’s attorneys will be meeting with the Developer’s attorneys regarding a possible purchase of land south of Rio Grande Boulevard.
Some on the AAC are hoping to buy land to expand recreational opportunities north of County Road 466. But the board is split on which way to go.
There are those on the AAC who are obviously still in favor of moving ahead on 40 acres of property in Marion County. The owner of that property has indicated he would be willing to sell it to the AAC for $3 million.
AAC Chair Ann Forrester warned that $3 million would be the start.
“You would need $3 million for a golf course and another $3 million for a recreation center. So you’re not talking about $3 million, you’re really talking about $9 million,” she said.
AAC member Don Deakin said possible facilities at Rio Grande would be near “the two most dangerous roads” in The Villages, Morse Boulevard and Rio Grande Avenue. He said traffic would increase if new facilities were located in that area.
The AAC agreed to have Tutt look into the possible purchase of land from the Developer and report back to the board.
