A man for whom a Silver Alert had been issued died in a wrong-way collision early Friday morning on Interstate 75 near Wildwood.

Clifford Shilling, 88, of Dunnellon, had been the subject of a Silver Alert when he was discovered driving the wrong direction on I-75, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Law enforcement deployed stop sticks in an effort to halt his vehicle. However, a pickup driven by Dale Yokoyama, 65, of Largo hit the stop sticks and collided with Shilling’s 2012 VW Passat. Yokoyama’s pickup then collided with a northbound semi driven by Alexis Lorenzo Ramas, 35, of Fort Myers.

Schilling died of injuries suffered in the crash.

Yokoyama suffered serious injuries and was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center.
