A 58-year-old Summerfield man surprised a would-be gun thief Wednesday afternoon.

The man drove up to his garage and was opening the door when he spotted a strange man running from the rear of his residence on SE 150th Street. The would-be thief appeared to be carrying multiple objects, according to an incident report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

When a deputy arrived, he found the homeowner’s guns, an 1894 Winchester 4440 rifle and a Marlin A3TS .22 Magnum rifle, along the fence line of his property. Also taken and dropped by the thief were two Peter England jackets.

Items inside the home had bee disturbed, the report indicated.

A K-9 unit was called to the scene but was unable to locate the suspect.
