The Villages released information on wireless internet usage at the recreation centers during Wednesday’s Amenity Authority Committee meeting.
Leading the charge were Paradise and Mulberry Grove Recreation Centers, who cumulatively used over 65 GB of data last month.
No other recreation center used over 9 GB of data for the month, but the wireless internet plans at the recreation centers do not have data caps.
Devices connecting to the wireless networks at these facilities include cell phones, lap tops, and tablets, among others. When logged on, these devices use “data” by connecting to the wireless network offered by the recreation center.
While connected to a wireless network, “data” is used whenever any action is performed using the internet. These include opening an app on a phone, checking an email on a lap top, and almost every other action you would take on a phone, tablet, or lap top.
When your device is not connected to a wireless network, it consumes data according to your contract with your cellular services provider (e.g., Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.).
When more users are logged onto a wireless network, or a cell phone tower when not using a wireless connection, the connections for all users are effected.
Fortunately, most of the data in The Villages suggests that very few users are logged on simultaneously throughout the recreation centers. Data shows the highest total number of users logged on simultaneously at a recreation center at 59 at Saddlebrook Recreation Center. That means 59 different users were connected to the “wireless network” and using data at the same time.
Alternatively, most of the wireless networks at the recreation centers in the Historic Section rarely have more than just a few users logged on.
