A judge has sentenced a former 33-year-old Florida National Cemetery worker who was accused last year of stealing a dead veteran’s wallet.
Kevin Andrew Cullen of Bushnell was arrested on June 20 and charged with stealing the wallet of a 93-year-old cremated veteran after being tasked with interring the deceased.
While resolving the veteran’s financial affairs, the veteran’s family members discovered credit card charges on his account the same day he was interred. The family reported the matter to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and administrators at the Florida National Cemetery.
Sumter sheriff’s detectives and a special agent from the Veterans Administration Office of Inspector General interviewed Cullen, who admitted to taking the wallet from the veteran’s urn, discarding the contents of the wallet and keeping the wallet and credit card. Cullen allegedly purchased pizza and video gaming cards with the stolen credit card.
Earlier this month, Cullen entered a plea of no contest in the case in Sumter County Court. He has been sentenced to four years probation and ordered perform 100 hours of community service.
