Golf carts to be fenced off from unofficial dog park after damaging grass

The Amenity Authority Committee will be taking steps to fence off an unofficial dog park located behind The Villages Regional Hospital.

Golf carts which travel on the grassy area near a retention pond south of El Camino Real have been doing damage to the turf. The damage to the grass has been exacerbated by the ongoing drought.

“The abuse of that property is tremendous,” District Manager Janet Tutt reported to the AAC at its Wednesday meeting.

The AAC agreed to spend $17,000 for a two-board fence that would block golf carts from entering the property.

AAC member Don Deakin questioned whether a two-board fence, which would stand 24 to 26 inches high, would be sufficient to ward off unwanted traffic.

“It should send a message,” District Property Manager Sam Wartinbee said.
