Community Development District 2 supervisors weighed in on a fence soon to be erected at an unofficial dog park behind The Villages Regional Hospital.
Earlier this week, the Amenity Authority Committee agreed to spend $17,000 for a two-board fence that would block golf carts from entering the property. The golf carts have damaged the grass at the area near the retention pond.
“They have beat it down to the point where there is no grass at all,” Sam Wartinbee of District Property Management told CDD 2 supervisors at their meeting Friday morning.
He said the fence is intended to restrict golf carts, not foot traffic. He said there will be three openings in the fence to accommodate pedestrians.
Supervisor Bill Schikora questioned why amenity money was being spent on the fence. He was told that area is under the Village Center Community Development District of which the Amenity Authority Committee has advisory status.
CDD 2 Chairman John Blum remarked that there are groups that meet there at 5 or 6 p.m. each night.
”None of those dogs are on a leash. If you are walking down there, you want to watch where you step,” he said.
