The Multiple Sclerosis Village People beat last year’s record in raising funds for MS research and finding a cure.
Proceeds also went toward supporting those who are diagnosed with MS and are in financial need.
So far in 2017, the group has raised $68,000 through their activities and events. This year’s amount is $12,000 more than what the group accumulated last year.
The money raised came from an annual MS Walk, a Mary Jo Vitale concert and a breakfast event. Funds were also generated from two Mahjongg tournaments and a rowing event.
The walk took place at The Villages Polo Grounds back in March, while the concert and breakfast were held in April.
The first Mahjongg tournament this year was held at Lake Miona Recreation Center earlier this year in February, and the second tournament was held at the Rohan Center in April.
“Our support group is extremely cohesive and supportive of our fundraising efforts. While the same core of people do the planning, many others volunteer to execute the plans, making our efforts very fulfilling,” said MSVP co-leader Barb Gaines.
The “Row to End MS” was held back in November of 2016 at the Central Florida Indoor Rowing Center in Summerfield, but still helped in raising the group’s funds for this year.
“The committee has been together for several years and has refined our event preparation and coordination over time,” said MSVP member Jeff Parker in regard to the group’s success.
This is MSVP’s tenth year in raising funds for MS research and aiding those with MS in need. The group works closely with the Mid-Florida chapter of the National MS Society.
