A Village of Belle Aire woman wired $250,000 to a man she met online, but never met face to face.
The 65-year-old woman wired the money over the course of a year to the man she met online and then communicated with through text messages and phone calls, according to an incident report from the Lady Lake Police Department. “George” told the woman he lived in Georgia, but was working in Berlin, Germany. Some of the money was wired to a man who claimed to be George’s housekeeper.
George told her to destroy all paperwork connected to the deposits, which she did, according to the report.
The woman went to the Lady Lake Police Department this week to report what had happened. She was referred to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and to Seniors vs. Crime.
