Villager avoids prosecution in theft of garbage disposal

A 75-year-old Village of Calumet Grove man will avoid prosecution after he was caught on video taking a garbage disposal from a woman’s vehicle parked at Lowe’s in Lady Lake.

Richard K. Pfleger was arrested March 30 after he turned himself in to Sumter County sheriff’s deputies.

He admitted to stealing the garbage disposal from the bed of the woman’s pickup, which had been parked near the lumber entrance on March 20 while she was in the store, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The incident, including video of the license plate on Pfleger’s vehicle, was captured on store surveillance.

Pfleger said he was angry that the woman’s vehicle had blocked his vehicle’s exit from the store’s parking lot. He said he no longer had the garbage disposal, valued at $69.79, because he had given it to someone else. He was arrested on charges of burglary and petit theft.

Last month in Sumter County Court, Pfleger was ordered to take part in a pre-trial intervention program. If he successfully completes it, the charges will be dropped.
