A Villager appealed to Community Development District 1 supervisors hoping they will allow him to keep a pair of raised flower beds at his home.

William Calabrese put in the raised flower beds at his home at 1302 Corona Ave. in the Village of Hacienda. The problem is that he did it without getting approval from the Architectural Review Committee.

The ARC denied a retroactive request, indicating that it was “not harmonious” with the neighborhood.

“I did not know I had to have approval,” he said.

CDD 1 supervisors looked at photos of Calabrese’s raised flower bed and offered praise.

“I would love to have something as nice as this, but unfortunately, you have to have approval,” said CDD 1 Supervisor and Master Gardener Kathy Porter. “My heart is with you.”

Supervisors Charles Amante and Craig Estep also expressed admiration for Calabrese’s work.

“It’s appealing,” Amante said.

District Counsel Valerie Fuchs said it is likely that a complainer did not share the supervisors’ admiration for the raised flower bed.

“That means somebody probably reported it as not being harmonious with the neighborhood,” she said.

Supervisors encouraged Calabrese to go back to the ARC and restate his case with photographs and other evidence.
