Volunteer parade marshals are needed for the upcoming Italian and German parades.
Although it is still the dog days of summer, the Resident Parade Committee is hard at work organizing these upcoming October parades.
The committee, with logistic support from the Villages Recreation Department, produces three parades annually. The Irish parade is in March. It takes 75 to 100 volunteers to make these parades happen. Right now each of the two October parades have a list of only about 20 volunteers.
“Volunteers are needed in every area,” said parade volunteer coordinator, Sally Canna. “I know we will fill in some of the slots as people return, but we could really use some help in the more active roles.”
Volunteer jobs range from the sedentary, manning the water tent, to the active, being a parade marshal. Canna is really looking for people to be parade marshals which requires the ability to walk the parade route.
“Good hearing is a plus for that position also,” said Canna. “They need to communicate by radio during the parade.”
Volunteers to guard the crossing areas are also needed.
Other opportunities to help with the parades include set-up, clean-up and staging. In addition to the water tent, volunteers are needed to distribute and retrieve radios and parade shirts.
The Italian parade is Tuesday, Oct. 3 and the German parade is Tuesday, Oct. 17. Both parades will take place in Spanish Springs Town Square and begin at 3:30 p.m.
