A Community Development District supervisor on Friday warned of a rat infestation in The Villages.
CDD 3 Supervisor Marie McAvoy said she has been hearing tales of rats from residents.
“I have a neighbor who had five rats in the attic,” McAvoy said.
She said other residents have told her that rats got into the garage and chewed on wiring in their vehicles.
Hawkes Bay Executive Golf Course has been invaded by rats, she added.
“It’s not just in District 3,” McAvoy warned.
She theorized that Hurricane Irma displaced the rats and sent them looking for new homes.
Assistant District Manager Richard Baier said traps have been put out on District property, but noted that the District cannot put traps on private property.
