
Clarence Nottingham “Chuck” Churn passed away last week at the age of 87.
Churn appeared as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers between 1957-59.
In 1959, he earned a World Series ring as a member of the Dodgers, who defeated the Chicago White Sox in six games to take the championship of Major League Baseball.
Also in 1959, Churn was the winning pitcher in relief of Sandy Koufax when the Dodgers defeated the Pirates 5-4.
The loss was the only one of the season for the Pirates’ Elroy Face, who went 18-1 on the season.
Churn had a career 3-2 record with a 5.10 ERA and had 32 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings pitched in 25 games.
The affable Churn was well known in the local community. A resident of Water Oak, he appeared at numerous clubs signing autographs at The Villages Collectible Club and speaking at numerous other sports clubs.
After retiring from the minor leagues in 1962, Churn became a playing coach and player/manager in the Houston Astros organization through 1967.
