Dec. 7, 1941: The day that brought death to more than 2,400 sailors; laid waste to America’s naval fleet in the Pacific; and immediately brought the United States into World War II, will be commemorated this Thursday, at 10 a.m., at The Villages’ Veterans Memorial Park.
This year’s ceremony includes keynote speaker Capt. Jerry Sexsmith, U.S. Navy (retired), and a performance by singer Pam Jones, representing Congressman Daniel Webster’s office. The Villages Sounds of Scotland with Kevin Selfridge will also perform.
“In this day and age, it is essential that we continue to recognize veterans who had put their lives ‘on the line’ in order to keep us safe,” said Richard Simpson, VMP president. “Pearl Harbor Day is one of 11 extraordinary days throughout the year, at the Park, that we pause to honor their devotion and sacrifice.”
Veterans Memorial Park, in Spanish Springs, is between Lake Mira Mar and the golf cart bridge spanning U.S. Hwy. 27/441. The public is encouraged to bring chairs. For more information, contact Judith Martin, VMP secretary, at 259-9489.
