The stockings once filled with presents to over-flowing are empty. The candy canes are no more. The evergreen, without lights and ornaments, made its final journey to the recycling center. Christmas is over.
But fond memories of Santa Claus’ annual visit remain especially vibrant for the children (and grown-ups) of the Truglio family. Santa knew everyone’s name; knew if they had been ‘naughty or nice’; and knew what was on their wish lists. Astonishingly however, even with a white beard, Santa looked just like family patriarch Frank.
This Christmas, continuing a tradition started 40 years ago in New Hyde Park, New York; he was Santa to the delight of 16 adults, 12 grandchildren, six nephews and nieces, and four of their kids’ friends.
“Each year, two neighbors and I had taken turns being Santa for the neighborhood kids,” Truglio said. “Now, I return every holiday and wear the same suit for our family get-togethers.”
The Village of Alhambra resident and his wife June moved to The Villages in 2007.
He is well known for his leadership role with the Italian-American Parade each October in Spanish Springs Town Square.
“I love to see the kids’ reactions. Some hug me. Some cry then they hug me,” Santa, alias Frank explains. “To see their happy faces is what Christmas is all about.”
