Some historic trees will be spared at the site of a new home in The Villages.

The large trees, which are said to date back to the time of the Revolutionary War, were to come down in the 1300 block of Debra Drive on the Historic Side of The Villages. Though they peacefully co-existed with a double wide for many years, that double wide was removed last year as The Villages planned to build a new home.

Amenity Authority Committee member Lowell Barker, who lives on the Historic Side of The Villages, announced at Wednesday’s AAC meeting that the trees will be spared.

He said the Developer has designed a house that will accommodate the trees.

“It shows something can be done if you really put your mind to it,” Barker said.

These trees on Debra Drive are said to date back to the Revolutionary War.

Villager Richard St. Amant, who lives across the street from the trees, campaigned to save them, appealing last year to the Lady Lake Commission.

Despite the pleas, The Villages was issued permits to remove the trees.

“I have no idea why the change in plans from turning the trees into firewood to saving them.  I am thankful for the help of  all concerned in appealing to the Town of Lady Lake last June to save these magnificent trees and to keep the dignity and appeal of the old-side intact,” said St. Amant.
