Combine an exciting line-up of talented entertainers with an equally impressive fund raising goal and the result is Wednesday evening’s sold-out Cruise Night 2018 produced by and for 110 members of the Gilchrist West Social Club.

The performance, featuring comedian Carmen Zallone and mentalist Laurence Francis, and was followed by a catered “midnight” buffet — at 8 p.m., and bingo with a $200 jackpot.

Mentalist Laurence Francis prepares for his show with Zam Blau, former Gilchrist West Social Club president.

“I’ve returned to my boyhood hobby of being a magician,” explained Frances before the show.

“My goal is to explore the human mind.”

Originally from Birmingham, England, Francis displayed his abilities in mind reading, telepathy, ESP nd precognition.

“Our neighborhood group holds events throughout the year,” said Faye Scher, the event’s organizer. “Each one also supports our charitable initiatives. For example, the proceeds from our Casino Night and our Luau are earmarked for Operation Shoe Box.”

Event organizers Barbara Peterson, Faye & Marc Scher, Vern Peterson, Bill and Nancy Byrnes.

Their next collaboration will be a lobster-bake in April.

“I hope others get involved in our charitable activities,” continued Scher.  “Some of our Gilchrist neighbors volunteer in the kindergarten at the  D-rated Wildwood Elementary School.  Working with these unfortunate kids has been an eye-opener. Last year, we contributed $3,000 worth of school supplies, and brought them winter coats, school uniforms and toys.”

The proceeds of the evening also have been earmarked for the school.

“My husband Mark and I have been very blessed.  Our kids went to exemplary schools in Texas,” Scher said.  “Now, since retiring, we want to give back in some way.”
