A Community Development District supervisor has suggested the cost of producing Recreation News could be offset by selling advertising in the weekly insert.
CDD 7 Supervisor William VonDohlen offered the idea Thursday morning at the monthly board meeting.
His suggestion came after the $702,000 Recreation News pricetag was revealed earlier this week by District Budget Director Barbara Kays.
Areas south of County Road 466 will be assessed $435,000. Areas north of County Road 466 will be assessed $190,000. The remaining 10 percent of Recreation News costs will be paid by the Developer to cover recreation centers in the newest areas of The Villages.
The money comes from amenity fees.
District Manager Janet Tutt said VonDohlen’s idea would “open a can of worms.”
She indicated that the Villages District Office, a governmental entity, could not wheel and deal with potential advertisers.
“We don’t support any private entity. It’s a slippery slope,” she said.
Earlier this week, Project Wide Advisory Committee Chairman Peter Moeller suggested the Daily Sun could charge more for readers who want the insert.
