League of Women Voters invites residents to forum with judicial candidates

The League of Women Voters wants you to be the judge by evaluating candidates running for local judicial positions.

The Villages/Tri-County chapter has invited the campaigners, and now also invites you – the voters – to its meet & greet Saturday, Aug. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Wildwood Community Center, 6500 Powell Road (County Road 139).

“We are receiving very enthusiastic responses,” said chapter President Beth Hicks. “There are not many appropriate opportunities for candidates who run for office to meet voters. By the nature of their offices, they cannot attend forums where they can discuss specific issues that may come before them on the bench.

“At our meeting, the candidates will offer brief introductions that include their backgrounds, expertise and thoughts about legal matters, such as interpreting the Constitution,” Hicks said. “Afterward, in small groups or on a one-on-one basis, they can continue the discussion that allows for additional insights into their beliefs and orientation.”

Candidates are vying for positions on the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court of Appeals, Fifth Judicial Circuit Court, and Marion and Sumter county courts.
League members also will distribute informational handouts about the election prepared by the Florida Bar Association.

Additional information about the election and the League of Women Voters is available at www.lwvtrifl.org or lwvtrimedia@gmail.com.
