A Villager who claimed he was late for a meeting at The Villages Regional Hospital won’t be prosecuted for violating the Move Over Law earlier this year on El Camino Real.
Robert Leon Bourbon, 76, of the Village of Calumet Grove, on April 26 had been at the wheel of a brown Honda CRV when he failed to move over for a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy who was completing a traffic stop. The deputy pulled over Bourbon’s vehicle at El Camino Real and Buenos Aires Boulevard, found that Bourbon did not have proof of his insurance and began to write him a citation. Bourbon waved his arms at the deputy and claimed he was late for a meeting at the hospital. He said he was “in a hurry.” Bourbon made vulgar statements toward the deputy and drove away, the report indicated. The deputy activated his lights and sirens and attempted to pull Bourbon’s vehicle over for a second time. Bourbon kept going and drove into the hospital parking lot. He got out of his car and began yelling at the deputy. He was arrested for resisting arrest, failure to move over and no proof of insurance.
Bourbon hired criminal defense attorney Cary Rada, who negotiated a pre-trial intervention deal for his client. The prosecutor’s office on July 23 in Sumter County Court filed a document indicating Bourbon will not face prosecution.
