
Bill Gunther died peacefully on August 14, 2018. He was proud of reaching 101 years of age. William Francis Gunther was born on January 5, 1917 in New Haven, Ct., to Charles and Catherine (Flock) Gunther.
Bill attended local schools, graduating Hillhouse High School in 1934 and Quinnipiac University.
Bill served three years in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 and participated in seven invasions of Japanese held islands in the Pacific. Bill joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and was recalled in the Korean War period.
Bill worked as a Life Insurance Salesman for 40 years for the Penn Mutual Life Ins. Co. He was active in this industry serving as President of the New Haven Life Underwriters Association and President of the Southern Connecticut Chartered Life Underwriters Association.
Bill moved to The Villages in Florida from Milford, CT, in 1993. He was a member of St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church, American Legion Post 347, the Off Off Broadway Players, Wyler Carroll Billard Club, and Lady Lake POA.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marylou Gunther and four sons; William F. Gunther, Jr. (Daphne) of The Villages, Marc W. Gunther (Barbara) of Junction City, Oregon, Paul T. Gunther of Charlotte, N.C. and Michael Gunther of Michigan. Bill also has two step-daughers; Karen (Richard) Mahon of Carmel, NY, Lonna Kelly (John) of Pawling, NY and two step-sons; Timothy (Margaret) of Lake Peekskill, NY, Brian (Dana) of Brookfield, Ct. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 17, 2018, from 4 – 8 p.m. at Cargain Funeral Homes, Inc., 10 Fowler Avenue, Carmel, NY 10512. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake R.C., Church, 1 Noonan Drive, Lake Carmel, NY. Interment will be private.
