Area residents are invited to attend a new health-based knowledge competition called Sumter Health Wise Prize.
The inaugural competition will be held at the Paul P. Williams Auditorium at the Leesburg campus of Lake Sumter State College on Oct. 26 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event is being put on by the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County, in cooperation with the college and the Sumter County School District.
To showcase and celebrate public health knowledge, teams of students from the three Sumter County high schools will compete on a challenging curriculum in front of a live audience. Cash prizes for the winning team and runners-up have been generously provided by the United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties.
The first competition will involve the Sumter County high schools, with a goal of expanding the competition to neighboring counties over the next few years.
“We are planning to see this program evolve and flourish over time with increased interest and sponsorship, said Dr. Sanford D. Zelnick, director of the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County.
