A Sumter County School District bus with 20 students onboard hit a teenager in a marked crosswalk Tuesday morning.
The incident took place around 8:30 a.m. in Bushnell at the intersection of County Road 48 and Broad Street. The pedestrian, 16-year-old Annamarie Brook Dykes, was knocked the ground and suffered lacerations to her right leg and ankle. She was transported to Leesburg Regional Medical Center a short time later for treatment, A Florida Highway Patrol report states.
The driver of the bus, 54-year-old Denise Blease Millett, of Lake Panasoffkee, was cited for failing to yield the right-of-way to Dykes. Millett traveled east after the incident and pulled her bus into a nearby parking lot, the report says.
Dykes had been crossing CR 48 in the marked crosswalk, heading to the north sidewalk. Traffic in the outside eastbound lane of CR 48 had slowed and then stopped for her to cross the roadway. But Millett, who was mid-block in the middle of the inside lane, failed to stop and collided with Dykes, the report states, adding that neither Millett or any of the students, who ranged in age from 11 to 14, were injured.
