Right or wrong, most of us have a personal relationship with the truth.
In fact, truth may only be a theory.
There are two camps of contributors to the Villages-News.com letter to the editor feature. One is the, clearly, identified writer of articles and the other is the, cartoonish, unidentified writer of comments. One usually proposes arguments and the other emphasizes persuasion or emotion. Arguments usually look at both sides of an issue and then presents an opinion based on the evidence. According to Louis L’Amour, Comstock Lode, “Nobody is ever convinced by argument. They just think up new reasons for maintaining old positions and become more defensive.”
Persuasion is usually more one sided because you want others to believe your idea is the best.
The Villages-News.com service agreement terms wisely prohibits threatening, defaming, abusive, harassing, degrading, intimidating, hate speech, suggestive, inappropriate, or explicit text and has the right to remove it. Therefore, I will limit my opinion of recent comments about the Illegal entry into the United States article to a quote by John Adams. “There are persons whom in my heart I despise, others I abhor. Yet I am not obliged to inform the one of my contempt, nor the other of my detestation. This kind of dissimulation…is a necessary branch of wisdom, and so far from being immoral…that it is a duty and a virtue.”
